Tuffley Environment Agency drop-in

Faye Elliott and Phil Jordan with Toby Willis (left) who designed the scheme

Faye Elliott, Phil Jordan and Alex McKee of the Gloucester Independents Alliance attended the Environment Agency drop-in at Tuffley Community Centre on the 3rd February 2009 to inspect plans for a new proposed flood defence.

The flood alleviation scheme, which is in an early stage of development, is proposed for land at Tuffley Farm on Grange Road in Tuffley. Details were scant but the general plan is to build an attenuation pond in the natural contours of the land east of the Railway.

The pond would release water more slowly into the Daniel’s brook on the other side of the railway embankment.

We support the scheme provided that a thorough ground and hydrological survey is undertaken to ensure that the £1.2m scheme would work as expected.

We express local residents concerns about the Whaddon development and local views that run-off from the Kingsway development increased the scale of flooding on the Daniel’s Brook in 2007 and 2008.

Faye Elliot speaking with EA staff member about the proposed scheme

Several EA staff members hinted that the agency was in talks with the local planning authority and the developers behind the controversial Whaddon development, and that the developers might part-fund the flood alleviation scheme. We expressed alarm at any deal-making with the developers.

We feel that further development on the edges of Tuffley or Quedgeley will only add to the flooding problems.

We would like to thank the Environment Agency and their helpful and friendly staff.
